Climate Change and Biodiversity –A Living Legacy Collection
David Douglas Botanical Gardens

What is Biodiversity?
Biodiversity is short for biological diversity – the variety of life in all its forms. It includes genes, species and ecosystems, and the processes that link them, an ensemble that many people think of simply as Nature. Biodiversity provides important ecosystem services to all living things, such as regulating climate and the flow of water. It also fulfills basic human needs, providing us with essentials like food and clean water, supplies the natural capital upon which our economy depends and satisfies a wide range of recreational, spiritual and cultural needs.

ASK A GARDENER

I need information on saving seed tubers for the Nooksack potato that is no longer available commercially as of 2010. Nooksack is a fine late season, all-purpose potato that stores until as late as April in a cool basement. It is scab resistant and does well in clay soils when handled properly before planting (grow out the sprouts, plant when the soil is warm). I am looking for advice on selecting seed tubers, before we eat the entire storage crop!

Response

I am not sure how you store your potatoes. The ideal situation is a dark place with the temp between 2-5 C. Pick out the best looking potatoes; free of blemishes, solid and those which appear to have good eye selection. Handle the potatoes carefully as cold potatoes bruise easily. Put the seed potatoes separate in small units and be sure there is good circulation in the area where they are store; as this will delay spouting. Hope this is helpful and good luck. It should be fairly damp, about 80%.
